Since it's an RPG there's obviously levels and skills you can upgrade, such as leadership, luck, cannons, sailing, etc. You can board ships and sink/steal them, you can have fort battles like in AC Black Flag, there are random encounters when you are 'fast traveling' through the map (think of Kingdom Come: Deliverance) etc.

There's classic weapons like cutlasses and pistols, although sword combat wasn't all that great if I recall correctly. There are 5 differents kinds of usable ships a tiny one that's like a dinghy, a slightly bigger one called a schooner, a brig, a frigate, and a galleon and you can have a fleet of up to 4 ships. You have to do some quests and finally earn enough money to get a new ship (or maybe it was a quest reward). You play as Captain Nathaniel Hawk and you wash up in the island of Oxford or some such after a storm. I somehow managed to beat the game and it was my favorite of that era, along with KOTOR 2. I didn't even know English back then so I had to ask my dad to translate some quests and stuff for me, but he didn't really know much English either.
